Despite their songwriting skill, Pavement didn’t get tagged slackers for nothing. Hear for yourself in this uninspiring live recording of one of their best songs.

This is a definitive Pavement song, originally heard on the breakthrough 1994 album Crooked Rain. It was instantly memorable, thanks to its shambling guitars and Stephen Malkmus’ laconic warning “We’re comin’ to the chorus now.” However, live Pavement recordings are best left to completists, since Pavement shows are some of the biggest non-events in rock -- particularly Pavement shows circa 1994, when the band appeared to have nothing but disdain for the faithful who flocked to see them in person. The highlight of this rendition of “Gold Soundz” is the finale: a drunken fan yelling, “Play some Butthole Surfers!” Save the space on your hard drive and listen to your copy of Crooked Rain instead.
