For the first thirty seconds of this song from The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, a lowriding bass groove lulls you into a false sense of security before suddenly giving way to a blast of angry power-chords. Vocalist Sonny Sandoval's rap about surviving life on the streets may resemble Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" in both cadence and content, but he obviously means every word he's screaming. His bandmates pound out the riffs like a giant jackhammer, then turn on a dime into a peaceful interlude, then come roaring back for more. The end result is something like Coolio jamming with The Bad Brains, and is several cuts above your typical rap-metal hybrid.
