As any trip-hop artist can tell you, the music’s roots lie as much in hip-hop as they do in any other form of electronic music. It’s a fact Tricky celebrates on his latest release, Juxtapose, as the acclaimed trip-hopper teams up with hip-hop producer Grease, of Ruff Ryders and DMX fame, and Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs. With “I Like the Girls,” from Juxtapose, Tricky creates his own apocalyptic vision of hip-hop, wrapping guest vocalist Mad Dog’s scatting in a dark cloak of chilling sounds. Musically, this live version remains fairly true to its recorded counterpart, as synthesized strings swoop over an edgy hip-hop beat. Instead, the track’s added energy comes entirely from the vocalists: you can practically see them prowling the stage, Tricky trading off his rough growl with Mad Dog’s rapid-fire wordplay. For the most part with Tricky, if you keep an open mind, you can’t go wrong -- this track is no exception.

Tricky rules! It's a Very good song. He's best live.

I give it the thumbs down.

Imagine Bone Thuggs, the UK version, and you've got this track from Tricky and friends. From what I can tell, Tricky just chants "I like the girls" against very speedy rapping. Neat track.
