Sumack Emphysema Album: LP1: This Is Junk Rock
Genres: Alternative
A loping homage to lung disease from LA up-and-comers with Cake in their eyes. |

A bouncy set of boho beats with the smart-ass quality of Cake, Beck, and other single-syllable alt-rockers, this track reveals a band with some moves but no slam-dunk. Everything from the singer’s delivery (with one eyebrow raised, probably) to the lyrics (“My emphysema...She’s a doll of milk and honey/you know she tastes like sugar cane”) and music (modem noise, matador-style trumpet) is just a little too self-consciously clever. If only this were horseshoes or hand-grenades....

Sumack's new CD, "Now Hear This" is amazing. They're even better live, with killer instrumental jams that are simply mind-blowing.
