Steve Earle Transcendental Blues Album: Transcendental Blues
Genres: Alt-Country,Rock
Country music's answer to Bob Dylan dials in this well-produced -- but seriously dull -- slice of pseudo-zen babble. Steve, we liked you better with the hellhound on your trail... |

Well, even the best songwriters have an off-day. "Transcendental Blues" isn't bad, but it sure as hell isn't the kind of hook-driven, self-revelatory writing we've come to expect from Steve Earle. Though the trippy, tribal-drums-meets-church-organ intro is a strong start, "Blues" quickly devolves into a generic roots-rock affair (albeit one with some tasty production). Am I asking for too much? Maybe. But from a songwriter with Steve Earle's chops, I'd hope for something more than an outtake gussied up with fuzz and a few studio flourishes.
