Breakbeat Era Ultra Obscene Album: Ultra Obscene
Genres: Electronic
The future is now with this unsettling, iconoclastic mix of skittering drum-and-bass and sneering vocals. |

Roni Size and DJ Die don’t even appear on stage during Breakbeat Era’s live shows, and once you’ve heard Leonie Laws’s singing, you’ll know why. After an intro of whipcracking beats, Laws’ husky, attitudinal vocals kick in, launching “Ultra-Obscene” into hyperdrive. Unlike other drum-and-bass divas, Laws’ voice demands attention as it skips lightly over Size’s and Die’s dark and soulful compositions. Fans of Size’s previous work will want to hold on for the ride, and anyone who’s never understood the fuss should prepare for enlightenment.

A mind rattling assault from the latest Roni Size project. Highly recommended.
