Leslie West Palace of the King Album: As Phat As It Gets
Genres: Blues,Rock
Great guitar playing barely justifies the existence of this punishingly stupid blues travelogue. Even die-hard Mountain fans should be embarrassed! |

"I can make you smile with every note I play," sings the self-styled Great Fatsby, and he's not far from the truth; if you're into heavy guitar rock with an emphasis on bloozy trills and sustains, West's playing on "Palace of the King" will definitely turn your frown upside-down. Too bad the song isn't an instrumental, though, because West overshadows his own instrumental excellence with dull-witted, unfunny lyrics about his world travels; nor does it help that he sings them in a strained voice that sounds more like the result of severe constipation than the legacy of a life spent on the road. And what's up with all this "going back to Dallas" business? Dude, you and I both know that you're from Long Island!

it starts out really cool, and the guitars kick ass, and then he starts singing. Dan Epstein is right... it should have just been left as an instrumental.
