Ben Harper Nobody's Fault (Live) Album: n/a
Genres: Rock
It’s not just money, romance, and prison that can give you the blues. The prospect of eternal damnation works pretty well too, as you can hear in this vibrant cover of a gospel-blues classic. |

Here Ben Harper pays tribute to one of his obvious influences, Texan slide guitarist and gospel singer Blind Willie Johnson, who wrote this simple, repetitive, and riveting song (also known as “It’s Nobody’s Fault But Mine”). Harper introduces his version -- recorded live at an Australian blues festival -- with a rambling comment about the blues’ all-pervasive influence, but his performance is straightforward and heartfelt. Harper can’t help but shine when it boils down to one man, his guitar, and that rarest of rock themes, a deeply ingrained sense of personal responsibility.

(sigh) BEN! I know far too many girls that would be willing to give up an article of clothing for this man, and baby....I know why- just listen to this man sing.

This song feels very laid back and somber, but you can feel the heart in Harper's eerie vocals. Not the best live material I've heard from him, but worth a listen.
