  Styx
Number One
Album: Brave New World
Genres: Rock
Styx tries to update their sound for the new millenium, with results so dire, you'll be pining for the days of "Babe" and "Too Much Time On My Hands." This "Number One" smells like Number Two!

Tommy Shaw sings and gets the writer's credit on this track from 1999's Brave New World CD, and he's obviously itching to show that the band can hold its own with young whippersnappers like Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins. Of course, he doesn't want to alienate the old Styx fans, either; and so he serves up "Number One," a disjointed mish-mosh of classic Styx stylings and "cutting-edge" poses. The verses and bridges feature the swirling, overly-orchestrated Styx sound of yore, but the tacked-on, distortion-heavy chorus sounds like the work of Trent Reznor's retarded cousin. There's also some hilarious whammy-bar wankery from Shaw and James Young, but it totally fails to disguise the stench of this misguided effort. Compared to "Number One," Dennis DeYoung's recent showtunes album seems like perfectly sensible move.

Wonderful melodies

Your review sucks big time Mr. Epstein, or maybe you are just a Dennis fan. Either way, you are way off base in regards to Number One! It's a great song and sounds just like we Styx fans want from them! So think again before blowing them off. The new band is going strong!
