What’s more surprising about this new offering from the man who helped invent gangsta rap: the glossy, melodic backing track, or the relentlessly positive message that reminds the kids, “the best thing in life/is life itself”? Whether your answer is A or B, there’s no denying that the anti-materialistic “Until We Rich” is a breath of fresh air amidst the cash-obsessed post-Puffy generation of rappers. While some cynics may say it’s easy for Cube to talk about ignoring wealth now that he’s gotten his, there isn’t exactly a chorus of other successful hip-hoppers joining his plea, is there? It all goes down smoothly regardless, thanks to airy background vocals courtesy of Krayzie Bone from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. |
