Like most college-area jam bands, Swamp Dog has plenty of chops to go around, but often makes the mistake of substituting proficiency for content. "Sleep"'s uptempo, bass-popping groove would fit in perfectly at a noisy bar filled with binge-drinking co-eds, but the song really cries out for a decent melody (and a singer with an ounce of vocal character) to take it to the next level. Jon Wood's frantic rhythm guitar work is really annoying, and nowhere near as funky as he'd probably like it to be; but his overdriven leads show potential, and his feedback flourishes during the quiet, psychedelic passages are pretty cool. These guys claim they love the Meters -- hey, who doesn't? -- but they'd be much better off emulating that band's "less is more" philosophy, rather than Phish's hundred-notes-per-bar approach. |
