“Bootstraps,” a track taken from Steel Pulse’ 1994 Vex album, is a textbook example of the tasteful pop crossover moves the band perfected long ago. Spot-on silky harmonies and a relentlessly optimistic outlook -- the “Bootstraps” referred to in the title are for pulling yourself up by -- help this track to stand proudly among Steel Pulse’s finest work. This live version is missing the chatting cameo by Tony Rebel during its dancehall breakdown, and the sampled orchestral hits are a bit annoying -- but it benefits from an increased sense of urgency, both in the brisk pace and in David Hinds’ superb vocals. |
