Cranking out space-age funk and sending you into orbit is just one of the things that New Orleans funk outfit Galactic excel at, and this track is no exception. Originally laid down by guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, "Third Stone From the Sun" is a raw, earthy, relentless groove served well by Galactic's brand of dirty instrumental madness. Unfortunately, the live recording starts abruptly (it's obvious they're coming out of another song directly into this one), but it's smooth sailing though dark waters from then on, and what a trip. Jeff Raines rips the guitar lead to shreds, backed by fat, latin-tinged beats courtesy of Stanton Moore and anchored by Robert Mercurio's solid basswork. You can just feel the sweat dripping off the walls on this one, and it's not hard to imagine the crowd -- eyes closed, immersed in the groove, moving as one. Evoking the spirit of Fillmore-era Santana, Galactic renders this cover with appropriate reverence for the original, losing nothing of their sound in the exchange.

Wholly Funk, Batman!!! It's always nice to hear those nice guys from New Orleans tear through a master, and the energy they pour into this one is no exception! Word of advice to the uninitiated-- it is best to have a cool drink of water (or a cocktail) handy to help quell the echoes you'll feel in your soul after listening to Galactic's hipshake-inducing fonk!
