Fugazi Repeater Album: Repeater
Genres: Punk
This seminal D.C. band of anti-rock stars embodies both the ethics and the sound of American punk. This song would be one of their smash hits -- if such a thing existed in the Fugazi universe. |

All the elements that define Fugazi’s sound and ethos coalesce on the title track from their classic 1989 album Repeater. It may be over ten years old, but it sounds like it was recorded yesterday. Relentless, driving rhythms alternate with angular, jumpy ones, while the pointed, elliptical lyrics are barked, shouted, and spit out like so much phlegm. The overall effect is minimalist but dense, as epic as punk-rock ever gets. This particular MP3 file doesn’t seem to contain all the facets of sound on the vinyl or even CD version of the song; the bottom’s been dropped out and the vocals and guitar have fallen through it. But you’ll get the basic idea from this track -- then do yourself a favor and go out and buy the whole record.
