North Mississippi Allstars Goin' Down South Album: n/a
Genres: Blues
A hard-riffin' electric field holler with a couple of smokin' solos, which probably works better live in a crowded juke joint than in the privacy of your own shack. |

Don't let nobody tell you that jam bands have all the fun: This hard-riffin' electric field holler from Shake Hands With Shorty finds the North Mississippi Allstars stretching out and grooving past the six-minute mark. Little more than a primitive, up-and-down riff with rudimentary lyrics and a brief turnaround section, "Goin' Down South" gets its power and character from two smokin' guitar solos, the latter of which finds Luther Dickinson reaching for his bottleneck. It's easy to imagine this number going down (no pun intended) wonderfully in a crowded juke joint, but on record it sounds overlong and even a trifle boring. Make no mistake, however: These guys are still THE SHIT.
This review refers to the studio version, not the live version.
