Ranking as one of Britain's premier drum 'n' bass DJs, L.T.J. Bukem has built his reputation on pushing the genre past its simple, beat-heavy roots. But "Sunrain," off his recent Journey Inwards, proves he's capable of transcending the genre all together. A light, slower paced track, "Sun Rain" hints at Bukem's early interest in jazz, in both the smoothness of its drums and the funk of its looped bass. The song boasts rich female vocals, which Bukem plays straightforwardly rather than in a jerky, spliced-up fashion. As such, the track is structured more traditionally, making it more accessible to fans outside the electronic music fold. With the decidedly non-drum 'n' bass "Sunrain," Bukem transcends not only musical limitations, but also critical expectations -- just as he's done throughout his decade-long career.
