Like "California Stars" on Mermaid Avenue, "The Secret of the Sea" is clearly Billy Bragg & Wilco's radio-friendly pick from their new album of salvaged Woody Guthrie songs. With lush guitars, smooth vocals, and simple chord structures holding sway, "Secret" sounds more like the Beatles than a folk ballad -- but the words are unmistakably Guthrie’s. Wisely, his living collaborators don’t try to compete with the master here -- the music may be Wilco & Bragg, but Woody Guthrie remains at center stage.

This song contains the Beatle's influence that Wilco used on last year's "Summerteeth," if you're a fan of that album, you'll love this song...Jeff Tweedy and the music sound great...followers of alt-country (and even those who don't) should definitely listen to this song...along with the rest of the album which also features a guest spot by Natalie Merchant.
