Winston Foster was born an albino in Jamaica, where his yellowish skin made him an outcast. But his charisma, quick wit and toasting skills made him a reggae star -- a role he played to the hilt with frequent (good-natured) musical boasts of his sexual prowess. Even though he’s the godfather of the dancehall slackness that exploded in the ‘90s, however, he’s also been known to offer a savvy and pointed conscious toast or three, and “War, War, War” -- a MUSICBLITZ exclusive -- falls into that category.

Whether he’s rhyming about peace or just a piece, Yellowman’s nimble mic skills hit the spot, as they do over this tough, old-style dancehall riddim that recalls the grooves that made him an ‘80s celeb. He was Jamaica’s hottest dancehall star in those heady days, thanks to an astonishing amount of releases and his rebirth as the self-proclaimed “Mr. Sexy.” That got the attention of CBS Records, who signed him to an international deal and hooked him up with American musicians like Afrika Bambaataa and Bill Laswell on “King Yellowman” and “Rambo.” Those albums played a role in the continuing fusion of reggae and hip-hop, as did Yellow’s cameo on “Roots, Rap, Reggae,” a cross-cultural ’85 throwdown with Run-D.M.C. But Yellowman then returned to the Jamaican dancehalls, and to his roots, showing he could still dominate the stripped-down digital sound he’d helped create -- something recent reissues like Negril Chill Challenge (a live set from ’87) make clear.

He remains a potent force in reggae, as well as one of its best-loved artists. And during the 90s, he’s seemingly mellowed a bit, even recording -- who woulda thunk? -- a Christmas album. But despite such laid-back signifiers, Yellowman can still get up a good head of dread steam, and “War, War, War” shows he’s not just a lover…he’s a fighter, too.

Uma ótima apresentação deste que é o melhor artista de reggae, não só por sua música, mas por sua história, dando várias lições de vida ultrapassando obstáculos praticamente intransponiveis.
