Instrumentally, "The Presence Is Ominous" is superb in structure, quality, and production -- a black metal equivalent of Phil Spector's "wall of sound." Unfortunately, the cheesy vocals -- the kind that evoke images of Dungeons and Dragons nerds dressed in full regalia -- smother the music in a little too much cheese for this listener. The song's low-end vocal track is fine, but the "mock opera" falsetto harmonies sound like King Diamond gone wrong. If you can get past this little setback, you'll probably love this song. Pour yourself a tankard, grab a serving wench, and let the jousting begin!
