Yunkuhpuss O Shit Album: MUSICBLITZ Exclusive
Genres: R&B
The Yunkuh funks like royalty -- a Prince, to be exact -- on this lean, mean party groove. |

Reaching back to 1982 for the classic sound of “1999,” the man known as Yunkuhpuss obviously knows his Prince. Just check the sex talk, lockstep groove and heavenly falsetto of “O-Shit,” a Musicblitz Exclusive download that marks the Yunkuh as a real funky comer. But don’t just take our word for it -- ask Dr. Funkenstein himself. That’d be George Clinton, who first spotted the colorfully-clad Mr. Y at a Los Angeles talent show he was judging, and gave him the top vote over 300 other acts. Clinton was so impressed, in fact, that he signed on to produce Yunkuh’s debut album, soliciting help from some kindred spirits: Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist extraordinaire Flea, and members of freaky funksters Fishbone (who may have been a hairstyle influence as well). All that remains is for you to dig deep into the figurative doo-doo of “O-Shit,” which picks up where His Royal Badness left off almost two decades ago -- while adding a modern wrinkle or three. But the basic formula -- keyboard squiggles and lyrical nods, winks and giggles laid up against a stiff-backed rhythmic pulse -- sounds every bit as good today as it did in those glory days of yesteryear. And just because Y2K’s over is no reason to stop partying like it’s “1999.”
