Superchunk 1,000 Pounds Album: 1,000 Pounds CD5
Genres: Alternative
These veteran Chapel Hill indie-rockers are no longer the flavor-of-the-month, but they still make great music. Here they endure the ultimate test -- going unplugged. |

It’s amazing how much an arrangement can alter a song’s mood and meaning, as Superchunk’s acoustic rendering of its 1999 song “1,000 Pounds” proves. This version slows down the original’s headlong rhythm-section rush, and morphs into a drifting, contemplative porch-swinger. The tempo is only partly responsible for the change; there’s also the fact that you can hear Mac McCaughan’s voice more clearly, and what sounds like vibes have replaced the rumbling drums. Superchunk’s trademark guitar fuzz-and-buzz has become less obvious in recent years, revealing the musicians’ more subtle side, and this little ditty -- electric or acoustic -- is a prime example of their songcraft.

Slow tempo tune with an ethereal vibraphone swirling over the vocals. I love this tune. Its almost a waltz, but not quite. Pop this one up when you wake up late on a sleep Sunday morning. It will be perfect. I almost forgot to listen to the lyrics!
