  Papa Roach
Last Resort (Live)
Album: Infest
Genres: Metal
This California quartet takes a crack at a metal-band rite of passage: The anti-suicide song. Unfortunately, they’re shooting blanks.

Rage Against the Sabbath, dude! Layering a “Paranoid”-style guitar riff and spoken-sung vocals over a shuddering, bombastic beat, “Last Resort” manages to incorporate every cliche of the jock-metal genre. Those in the first blush of music-fandom or burdened with excess testosterone might enjoy the sights on this well-trodden path of suicidal anguish. Anyone who’s left behind the moshpit will find Papa Roach to be yet another Faith No More rip-off with Offspring tendencies. For a metallic update on the tried-and-true themes of alienation, remorse, and self-loathing, I’ll take the Deftones any day.
