Now That It's Over
Album: Songs from an American Movie
Genres: Alternative
Breaking up is hard to do, but sometimes it’s even harder to listen to someone who’s breaking up complain about his ex. This bitter little ditty is a perfect example.

With a bit of recycled Led Zeppelin (“When the Levee Breaks”) as its hook, this grandiose musical kiss-off is a kind of millennial power ballad for the newly single. The heavily manipulated arrangement, strings and all, could’ve produced quite a guilty pleasure. But then Art Alexakis opens his mouth, shattering the illusion with shaky attempts at sarcasm. Move over Dylan, these ire-filled couplets are pure poetry (or pure something): “My nightmares just don’t scare me now / Baby without you / I wish that I could find the words to tell you to politely go fuck yourself / Now that it’s over.” By the time he reaches the second verse, you’re wishing his ex-girlfriend well, and searching for your copy of Def Leppard’s “Bringin’ On the Heartbreak.”
