There are great live acts, and there are great studio acts. And then, there's Galactic -- a band capable of busting both your speakers and your kneecaps, who can hotwire your hips until all you can do is relinquish control and give it up to the space-age groove. Talk about living up to your name!

Guitarist Jeff Raines throws the first punch on the MUSICBLITZ Exclusive "Black-Eyed Pea," and it's during his initial Delta-blues assault that you'll realize you may as well throw your hands up and surrender your backfield to the motion. The twists and turns keep coming; just when you think the band has settled in for a smooth little workout -- anchored by Rich Vogel's roller-rink organ, and Ben Ellman's squeak-squonk saxophonics -- they suddenly let it all loose. Ellman may as well be standing right over you, hitting you on the noggin with his sax for all the damage he does. It's almost shocking to hear this kind of energy on a studio release, but that's the beauty of Galactic's music -- it's got 420 horsepower, groove control, the whole nine. Stanton Moore works the beats on this one, allowing you to lock into the rhythm and adding a sense of structure to the chaos the rest of the band creates. Armed with a sinister edge, yet so damned accessible, "Black-Eyed Pea" is a true reflection of Galactic's unique musical universe. Kind of like prep school for the uninitiated, it should only take this one song for you to get your diploma. Class dismissed.
