Change (In the House of Flies)
Album: White Pony
Genres: Metal
One of the ‘tones most sensitive and intense moments, “Change” hypnotizes the soul for five minutes, then burns a black stain on it. Godly!

If there ever there was a track more representative of the Deftones’ sensitive (under)tones, “Change” – White Pony’s flagship track and, next to closer “Pink Maggit,” the album’s finest moment – would be it. At first listen, “Change” is an eerily calm experience, the whole five-minute song percolating with dense, hypnotic guitars yet never over-brimming with energy; in a sense, it’s almost anti-climactic. Leaving it at that, though, would be utterly criminal because, with each successive listen, “Change” works its way under the skin, actually bristling with more intensity than if it was comprised of a barrage of drop-D bricks. This is why the song is so effective (infective?): Wounded-psyche muscle-rock doesn’t get any more cathartic or compelling than this while remaining so elegant and otherworldly. It’s almost as if the Afghan Whigs went on a strictly steroid-shake diet and made regular visits to the local opium den – it’s that good, folks. Lastly, the song also owes a great debt to vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno, who gives a fallen-angel performance he might never repeat (let’s pray he does). Without a doubt, “Change” deserves to be this year’s king of rock radio.
