Jimmy Page & the Black Crowes Mellow Down Easy Album: Live at The Greek
Genres: Rock
Page and Crowes get down and dirty on this live version of Willie Dixon's classic blues. Nothin' mellow or easy about it, baby! |

One of the more traditional-sounding tracks from the smokin' Live At The Greek CD, "Mellow Down Easy" finds Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes tackling the oft-covered Willie Dixon classic. Anyone who grew up digging ZZ Top's version (from on their Fandango LP) will have trouble even recognizing this as the same song, but that's okay — the sinuous, rolling groove that the band applies to it here works just as well as the Top's frenzied attack. The wicked slide duel between Page and Rich Robinson is thrilling in the extreme, and Chris Robinson leans his lips into some very respectable harmonica lines. (Nice barrellhouse piano from Ed Harsch, too!) For the most part, the Greek crowd sounds like they're cooling their heels at this point, waiting for the band to kick into something they know — like, maybe, "Whole Lotta Love" or even "Rock and Roll" — but the band sounds like they're having the time of their life.

I like it, it's cool. The mixture of the two is pretty nice.
