  Kid Rock
American Bad Ass
Album: The History of Rock
Genres: Metal,Rap/Hip Hop
A lunk-headed rap-rocker for sure, this track nonetheless samples Metallica to enjoyable effect. And, above all, it’s good lowbrow fun.

Right from the very beginning of Kid Rock’s “American Badass,” you'll have already decided whether you’re going to go headhunting over his sampling of Metallica’s “Sad But True” or just merely accept it -- and most people will probably accept it. In the hands of others without a dual appreciation for rock and rap, the sample would fall flat -- instead, Rock brings out even more energy and sweat in that song’s chugging boulder of a riff, coming off more as a smartass than a dumbass, commanding people to suck his manhood and reading off a laundry list of bands and musicians he loves: The Clash, Grandmaster Flash, Johnny Cash (see the rhyme scheme here?). But you’ve got to admit, Rock has a loud-mouthed charisma no matter what idiocy he’s spouting or how he's prancing about. After successive listens, “American Badass” actually becomes quite fun. Sure, it’s lowbrow and tacky, but Rock has never made any concessions to being a master artiste – he just wants to rock the block in any way possible, and he certainly does here. Plus, how can you deny a rhyme about a 30-pack of Strohs?! Mmmm … Strohs.
