The first segment of a piece Cage wrote in 1942 for his own instrument, the prepared piano, this sparse, striking work encapsulates the desolation and horror of its title. With its gamelan-like tones, the prepared piano suggests a time lapse, as though there were two instruments trying to play in synch but never quite attaining harmony. A longtime friend of Cage's, pianist Margaret Leng Tan was the first person to record In the Name of the Holocaust, and remains one of the premier interpreters of his keyboard compositions. In this quiet, compelling recording, she reinforces Cage's belief in the power of simplicity.
