Taj Mahal Cruisin' (Live) Album: Shoutin' In Key - Live
Genres: Blues
Smooth but packed with soul, this prime-time Taj track shows he can turn any groove into gutsy blues. |

A textbook example of Taj Mahal’s multi-genre musical mastery, the laid-back “Cruisin’” has a slight ska feel and a jazzy muted trumpet solo to spice up its arrangement, which is fairly slick by Mahal’s standards. But like most Taj tracks, it’s still 100 percent blues, driven by his throaty, soul-drenched vocals and delivered with the kind of unaffected ease that only the greats can muster. The intimate live setting is a bonus, giving an already immediate track an even larger dose of urgency. Highly recommended.
