Smashing Pumpkins Speed Kills Album: MACHINA/the machines of God

An import-only release, this histrionic ballad is one of Billy Corgan’s final efforts as a Smashing Pumpkin. Is he going out with a bang or a whimper? Hear for yourself... |

He may have a whiny voice, but Billy Corgan can definitely write a spectacular alt-rock power ballad. Unfortunately, the seamless beauty of his melodies often matches the banality of his lyrics. “Speed Kills” is a perfect example: atop a lush, swirling epic -- complete with dramatic, screaming guitar solo and space-rock studio effects -- Corgan mewls emotionally about “the last rose of summer” and being Forever young / Forever blind / Into the stars / We rock tonight.” You can only download this song if you have a lighter handy to hoist in the air.
