With the Who reuniting yet again for summer 2000, the public has been casting its collective memory back to the seminal mod band's lengthy career. Apparently, so has guitarist Pete Townshend, who's unearthed a couple of early demos of one of the band's biggest hits, "Behind Blue Eyes." This take -- which Townshend believes he recorded some time in 1971, either in his kitchen or on the road -- features Townshend on vocals rather than Roger Daltrey, backed by nothing but his acoustic guitar. The demo varies only slightly from its recorded counterpart, though Townsends shy, less assured vocal delivery accents the song's sense of longing and melancholy. If anything, it serves as a reminder: Daltrey may have been the Who's charismatic frontman, but their vision always lay in the hands of Townshend.

very good
james

Given four stars only because it is not as chilling as the Who's later version of the song, this is a classic rock ballad that captures the cold feelings of Vietnam. You can hear this track in the '70s movie "Apocalyse Now," which is based on Joseph Conrad's novel "Heart of Darkness" concerning the evil nature of man. This song captures the idea of the burden of the man who makes hard decisions behind the hardened facade of crystal cold blue eyes.
