Dead cover bands are about as plentiful as hemp necklace vendors in the lot at a show, but Jazz is Dead take a different approach. Instead of trying to completely recapture the exact sound of the Dead as many cover bands do, they go instrumental. This would all be fine were the vocal lines not replaced by T. Lavitz's cheesy, midi-like keyboard -- it sounds like one of those annoying musical greeting cards you get from that aunt who's known for her lack of taste. The only saving grace in the keyboard department is the fat, funky B3 sound he counters with throughout most of the track. Blame the soundman, but Alphonso Johnson's bouncy basslines are way too far up in the mix here, distracting you from Jimmy Herring's less-than-solid guitar work. The pace gets a bit flubbed in the middle and the band's far from tight, leading you to wonder just what exactly is going on backstage in the dressing room. Stick with the Dead's version -- at least with the original you can surrender to the flow instead of getting jerked around by it.
