First off, Brutal Truth's nom de plume is accurate: this is a brutal fuckin' tune. The riffs on "Jemenez Cricket" are razor-sharp and elephant-tits heavy, the drums are louder than Thor's hammer, and vocalist Kevin Sharp has the "gargled with Draino" yowl that marks all great doom 'n gloom metal. But what makes this tune a cut above the standard ranch thrash is the insightful, searing lyrics. Brutal Truth's apocalyptic visions are as dark and dreary as, say, those of Cannibal Corpse, but "Jemenez Cricket" has an almost positive message within it's sonic assault. In Brutal Truth's world-view, Satanic hordes and flesh-ripping demons aren't half as scary as the demons that come from the end of a junkie's needle. Sure the pleasure's great, Sharp seems to scream -- but is it worth turning your back on your family for temporary euphoria? From a purely musical standpoint, "Jemenez Cricket" doesn't really add anything new to the grindcore/thrash metal canon; they're a competent band, but you've heard all this before. However, the unique lyrical take, a refreshing change in the often monotonous world of thrash, more than makes up for it.
