Really, this could have been so good -- Carl Perkins, one of the architects of rock & roll, and Willie Nelson, undoubtedly one of country music's finest pickers, taking on an all-time classic blues nugget. When Perkins originally recorded “Matchbox” in 1957, he maintained the bluesy spirit of the Blind Lemon Jefferson original, while adding a smart pop hook and a heavy dose of country twang. This 1996 update could've been even more exciting -- an old-fashioned guitar head cutting, with Carl's rockabilly licks keeping pace with Willie's trademark jazz-style phrasing. Sadly, this “matchbox” never works up much heat as it should have. Oh, sure Mr. Perkins checks in with a solo that's as strong as anything he's ever done, but Willie barely gets a chance to warm up before his solo is cut off. To top it off, the song’s fade-out is awkward; listeners are left with the feeling that we’ve missed one helluva guitar jam. To be fair, this is a nifty update, and Perkins does sound on top of his game, but as those familiar licks from that well-worn guitar drift away, what should have been magic, feels like a missed opportunity.
