The perfect way to meet drumming dynamo Art Blakey is on this smoking live take of Charlie Parker’s bop anthem. It’s got star power to spare: this Messengers lineup includes legends Wayne Shorter and Lee Morgan handling the horns, and they do a credible job of reprising the roles of Bird and Diz (although pianist Bobby Timmons deserves mention for his nicely understated solo, which starts out gently bluesy and then tosses in some chunky, harder-edged chordwork at the end). But the show here is really Blakey’s, since this tune is made to order for his pumping, wham-bam style. Even choosing to open the tune with a drum solo proves to be a wise arranging decision, because Blakey’s playing is pure forward motion -- no cute stuff or digressions -- and sets the table well for the feast to follow.
