As dependable as Old Faithful, “The Trees Have Eyes” finds King Diamond and company entering the new millenium with nearly the same sound they started with 14 years ago -- and it still kicks any other death metal veteran’s ass. Winding through dark aural catacombs, the quartet travels along to a mid-tempo Maiden-esque gallop, peppered with sly syncopation and subtle down-tempo shifts, once again proving that the King has a meticulous ear for detail and texture. But the real highlight here is the middle section, where King’s angelic harmonies play mournfully against the meaty main riff. Striking a perfect balance between class, chaos and craft, “The Trees Have Eyes” is a quintessential King Diamond cut.

And contrary to popular belief, he doesn't only like heavy metal.
