Slaves On Dope War Pigs Album: n/a
Genres: Metal
It’s pretty hard to fuck up a song as immortal as Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” -- Slaves on Dope don’t. |

A song as monolithic as Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” is pretty hard to fuck up; as long as you can play your instruments, it’s gonna’ rip -- just not as much as the original. Such as is the case with Slaves on Dope’s reading of this classic cut. What becomes readily apparent right from the get-go is the quartet’s attempt to reinvent it. Eschewing Bill Ward’s original thundering tom-tom work, drummer Rob Urbani busies the lumbering tempo with snappy snare shots, lending a more modern, distinctly urban-metal feel to the track’s primordial riffing. Likewise, vocalist Jason Rockman’s screamer status is at odds with Ozzy’s nasal wail. However, in his attempt to outdo the immortal Ozzy, Rockman just ends up over-extending himself, his protracted larynx-shredding sounding closer to spoiled-brat status than “in the zone” sincerity. Nonetheless, Slaves on Dope’s cover of “War Pigs” will probably keep the Ozzfest 2000 crowd headbangin' through the summer.
