Put your clothes back on, “Mr. Flirty Flirty”: this bare-bones AIDS bulletin from the dancehall warns you to change up your ways! |

It’s spooky and spare -- even by dancehall standards -- and that’s what makes this safe-sex sermon really stand out from the sea of “watch where you put that thing” tunes. Accompanied only by a twanging rhythm guitar and queasy-sounding synth, Sister Carol’s toast takes center stage, and there’s more to it than meets the ear on first listen. You might need a couple of tries to appreciate how it compliments, and sometimes carries, the ominous melody. Of course, an extra run through will probably help you crack some of the patois, and reveal lines like “Don’t chase a skirt / Button up your shirt,” directed at the dancehall’s modern day rude boys.
