Once and future Cult leader Ian Astbury has made frequent note of his infatuation with electronica, and his desire to marry that genre with the fuel-injected guitar rock that was the hallmark of his late '80s heyday. More power to him -- it sounds like a killer idea. On "High Time Amplifier," though, it's an idea that is only partially realized. Astbury starts off a little shakily, with a vocal intro that suggests Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," but thankfully moves into a grittier groove, complete with snaky guitar run and propulsive beat. Unfortunately, that's about all Astbury infuses into the track, opting instead for the repetitive quality that defines less dimensional electronica. The good news is that Astbury has at least proven that his idea has possibilities -- "High Time Amplifier" is the proverbial sonic step in the right direction.
