Former Squirrel Nut Zipper Tom Maxwell has most definitely broken ranks with the swinging hot jazz manifesto set forth by Jim Mathus and Squirrel Nut Zippers. Although he still manages to reference that style on his solo debut, Samsara, Maxwell also shows his versatility and talent by throwing around a number of additional genres as well. "Can't Sleep" finds Maxwell exploring the classic gospel/blues form that has its roots in the earliest part of the century -- Maxwell's spin on the genre falls comfortably between authentic recreation and pop reinvention, with a howling guitar adding a potent counterpoint to the track’s barrelhouse piano. This will obviously appeal to SNZ fans, but has the potential to reach a much wider audience.

An upbeat blues number, if thats possible, with half-silly crooning and more upbeat rhythms than Maxwell ever explored in the hot jazz ethos of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. "Can't Sleep" may encrourage insomnia, but at least you'll be half-entertained through this tangy treat.
