Recorded in June of 2000 at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle, WA, "Trampoline" finds the 20th Congress joined onstage by kooked-out saxophonist Skerik (of Critters Buggin'/Tuatara/Crack Sabbath fame). It's a long song, clocking in at 13:30, but you'll be boogying all the way through, thanks to Robert's fat Hammond grooves. His boogaloo bop is complimented by the swingin' basslines laid down by Chris Stillwell, and when Skerik starts blowin' his own personal brand of nasty jazz skronk, you'll find yourself wishing you were there. Halfway through the song, they bring it all down, inviting you in for an intimate, serene little jazz sax duet between Skerik and Congress saxman Cocheme Gastelum that's just as smooth as anything you've ever heard, eventually building back up to the be-bop swing of the first half. The sax work is beautiful, and you can feel the musicians' mutual respect -- there's no showboating here -- each holding back just enough and stepping to the front when appropriate. It's exciting to hear this kind of stellar jazz groove from a group so young, and you're guaranteed to be left asking for more.
