Over the past two decades, Black Uhuru has always been able to find just the right balance between hummable melody and heavy dread riddim, and this MUSICBLITZ Exclusive, featuring new Uhuru vocalist Andrew Bees, keeps that tradition intact. The arrangement on “Justice” is a little thicker and glossier than the group’s older Sly and Robbie-produced sides, thanks to atmospheric synth, plus acoustic AND electric cello (when’s the last time you heard that combo on a reggae track?). Beneath the mellow instrumentation, however, Sly and Robbie pump out the same powerhouse bass & drum pulse that drove so many of the band’s classic cuts. Bees’ vocals bring a quiet strength to the proceedings, and those rich Uhuru harmonies help seal the deal. A variation on the classic conscious theme -- without justice for each one of us, there’s justice for none of us -- the tune is no rabble-rousing call to arms. Instead, it’s a gentle but firm demand for dignity that proves to be just as effective.
