Genres: Punk
Driving, jangly post-punk art noise that further proves why MOB are indispensable to the last 20 years of American music. |

Mission of Burma's sound, that urgent, insistent mixture of Roger Miller's guitar and punkish pop songwriting, is captured on the once hard-to-find "Progress" from Ace of Hearts The Wasted Years compilation. Opening with the sharp pounding of a strident guitar, the song rushes by like a white-hot train, with urgent, angry vocals atop a careening rhythm. The song's tension -- and there is plenty -- is the result of breakneck drums attempting to find a center amidst the chaos and fury of Miller's guitar and voice. When it finally collapses in an explosion of shouts and bangs, you’ll feel completely wrung out -- but ready with twitching fingers to cue it up again.

Mission of Burma's blistering penchant for the extreme jumps out of the speakers and mauls your face on "Progress". I say this holding the belief that this song is not even their best material. Mission of Burma typify what good music is to me. They were smart, skilled, and passionate. Even a cursory listen to Mission Of Burma will change your life and have you begging to hear more.

with melodic guitars, "progress" might strike you as "punk-lite" at first, but don't be mistaken. The insightful lyrics really gave me something to think about.
