After 23 years, the original Voidoids have reunited for “Oh,” a MUSICBLITZ Exclusive that recalls all the power and passion of the band’s halcyon days. While the subject matter may seem odd to longtime Hell fans (who would have expected such feel-good lyrics as “The sun is breaking through the clouds / The sky is like the face of God”?), the artist’s pleasantly atonal croak is in fine form, and the indie-rockish fuzzy guitar is a deliciously dark touch. The effect is something akin to the Smiths in reverse -- where Morrissey would sound morose over Johnny Marr’s sunny, jangly guitar lines, Hell is pleasantly upbeat over Robert Quine and Ivan Julian’s drony, (yet full-flavored) riffs. The song (produced by Bryan Martin with Hell and the Voidoids) has a stark beauty, and its catchy chorus will linger in your head like a pleasant memory of childhood. It's great to have the Voidoids back after such a long absence, especially in such fine form. While their fury may have mellowed a bit with age, this track is still as compelling as anything they did back in '77.

Words & Music by Richard Hell. Published by: Automatic Music (BMI). Middle Solo: Robert Quine. Outro Solo: Ivan Julian.
