Sharp raps…haunting, cooing vocals…semi-fatalistic tone. On their introduction to the world, The Spooks live up to their name. Inspired by Larry Fishburne’s upcoming flick, Once In The Life, about two brothers on divergent paths, the thoughtful, somber lyrics deal with life’s contradictions and the notion that there’s a flipside to every story. Yep, the world’s a paradox according to these four MCs, whose distinct flows (one sounding a lot like ODB) mingle nicely with Ming-Xia’s plaintive singing. The live instrumentation lends an organic vibe that fans of the The Roots and Lauryn Hill will appreciate.
