Proof that there’s more to Bounty Killer than gal ‘n’ gun chats, “Defend the Poor” is an energetic dancehall call to “break down the barriers / and pull down the doors” and stick up for the less fortunate. The backing track is simple, but a little tricky rhythmically, with its exploding electro-tom fills and bass blips on the off-beats, and can throw you at first -- especially since the track has almost no intro to help you pick up the riddim. But once you’ve got it locked in your head, you can settle back and enjoy a typical bravura performance from Bounty Killer, who uses his full range of vocal styles -- from growls to keening sing-jaying -- to offer a break from his usual toughman routine. Lots of successful DJs grew up in poverty, so it’s nice to hear one make an overt declaration of support for the suffering, however heavy-handed it might sound.
