The opening track from 1994's One Foot In the Grave, "He's A Mighty Good Leader" comes from a completely different universe than "Loser," the 1993 hit that put Beck on the map. An acoustic number in the country blues tradition, the song finds Beck doing his best Skip James imitation, finger-picking an acoustic guitar and singing like he hasn't slept in three days. Though his wobbly meter can be annoying at first, the song's overall vibe is peaceful and soothing. Recent rumors about Beck's Scientology connections give the lyrics a new (and slightly creepy) meaning, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the title doesn't refer to L. Ron Hubbard. |
