The reverb-heavy backdrop of Swayzak’s “Kensal Rising” recalls Portishead, but that’s about the only similarity between the Bristol-based trip hop icons and this London-based duo. After a few seconds, the bass kicks in, and the deep house groove drives the track, giving it an urban feel that somehow evokes images of subway trains. Vocals and electronics flitter in and out, but it’s definitely the bass and beats that drive this tune, contrasted nicely over that constant, trippy reverb. While by no means a classic, “Kensal Rising” is a strong effort that’s excellent for dancing. |
