If “Bam Bam” sounds familiar, it’s probably because it uses the same “hip-hop lick” from producers Sly and Robbie that made “Murder She Wrote” such a runaway smash for Chaka Demus and Pliers. It also has the sweet vocals Pliers added to that tune, but not the tough chatting of Chaka Demus, which is missed; you can really tell here how much he added to “Murder.” The empty space makes Pliers’ vocals sound kind of spooky, especially when coupled with the similarly scaled-back lyrics. Unlike the rather complex tale of a good-looking bad girl on “Murder,” “Bam Bam” is a simple but ruthless don’t-bug-me declaration that suggests Pliers is packing heat: “If you trouble this man / It will bring a bam bam,” he sings. Combined with the unstoppable riddim, it’s effective enough to make this more than just a lesser prelude to a later hit.
