Unearthed from the pre-reggae days when Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer were a ska combo known as the Dancing Wailers, this easy-rocking groove shows young Bob was already turning his thoughts toward the struggle for justice. “The harder they come, the harder they fall / This is a lesson for one and all” isn’t exactly a hardcore conscious lyric, but it points in the direction of future, deeper revelations. The backing here is by the renowned Skatalites, and it takes a few seconds before a clearly recognizable Marley emerges from the thick harmonies (including the voice of former Wailer Junior Braithwaite) to deliver a confident and winning vocal performance. For only the Wailers’ second trip to Studio One -- this was recorded in 1964 with Coxsone Dodd, who also co-wrote the song with Marley -- “Climbing the Ladder” is pretty heady stuff.
